You've heard the expression "You snooze, you lose". Well, the opposite is actually true. You have much more to lose - your good health and maybe even your life!
Insomnia, is the inability to fall asleep and stay asleep which can lead to physical, mental, emotional, or safety problems. Worry is probably the most common cause, but sleep aprica, restless legs syndrome, or too much light noise in your bedroom are sometimes to blame. Certain medications and lifestyle choices including too little exercise or drinking too much coffee can also keep you awake.
Experts explain the danger with the term sleep debt. Any time you don't get enough sleep (at least 8 hours for adults) you accumulate sleep debt. Thus, sleep deprivation has been known to lead to all kinds of health problems such as the following:
1) sleep deprivated drivers are just as dangerous as drunk drivers
2) added stress
3) your memory suffers
4) withdrawn from family and friends
5) less sex
6) greater risk for diabetes since you produce more insulin
Sleep debt is a growing problem. A recent survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation reports that 63% of American adults get less than 8 hours of sleep per night. People are working working more and sleeping less.
