The best way to control constipation is to do it nature's way. Here's how you can get relief from constipation:
1. Eat more roughage: Eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains add bulk to your stool and helps move it through your digestive tract. All of the above are rich in fiber. In fact, Dr. Robert Goodlad of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London says "I still advocate eating plenty of fiber rich foods and would favor fruits and vegetables over cereal fiber."
2. Get plenty of exercise: Regular physical activity can help your digestive system work more smoothly. Try a simple exercise such as a brisk walk around the block daily.
3. Wash away waste: Drink at least six 8 ounce glasses of water each day. Especially, when eating more fiber. Try to avoid coffee, tea, and milk. Try mixing 1 to 3 tablespoons of honey into a glass of warm water and drink - its a change of pace and you won't run the risk of becoming dependent on harsh laxatives.
4. Keep regular bathroom habits: Whenever nature calls make time for the toilet.
You may occasionally need a laxative, even if you follow the above practices. A mild one, from time to time, shouldn't do any harm. However, if you need them on a regular basis, or for more than 7 days in a row, see your doctor.
