Reducing The Risk Of Breast Cancer
By: Richard Bleuze
Since October is breast cancer month, I thought that I would post a brief article about reducing the risk of breast cancer. Breast cancer affects million of women each year, however, today most women have another option. That option is prevention!
In the United States, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. In addition, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women in the United States.
Many reports today show that there are ways to prevent breast cancer. One such report is by the American Institut for Cancer Research. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, maintaining a healthy weight, breast feeding, exercising regularly, and limiting consumption of alcoholic beverages can reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Based on these conclusions, the AICR recommends the following for reducing the risk for breast cancer:
Consuming a low-fat diet packed with wholesome fruits and vegetables are a big plus in the battle to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Exercise should also be part of everyday life. This can include walking, jogging, swimming, or a combination of exercises.
New mothers should breastfeed their baby's exclusively for up to 6 months and then add other liquids and foods. There is much evidence showing that mothers who breastfeed reduce their risk for breast cancer. In addition, there is evidence that shows that children who have been breastfed have a lower risk of gaining excess weight as they grow.
Quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption also reduce the risk of breast cancer. In fact, their studies have shown that even one or two drinks a day can slightly increase the risk of breast cancer. In regard to smoking, just about everyone has heard how unhealthy cigarettes are for you; they put you at risk for developing various types of cancer.
Finally, many of their studies have shown that women under 35 who have been using birth control pills for more than ten years are at an increased risk of breast cancer. Thus, it is recommended that women should take a break from oral contraceptives every six months and use an alternative method instead.
It is also suggested, that women should have an annual mammography screening in addition to performing monthly self-tests to take to stay healthy. The goal is to detect breast cancer during its early stages of development. In so doing, a number of effective treatment options are available.
Adopting these lifestyle changes and reducing exposure to substances that have been shown to promote breast cancer, such as hormones and chemicals, will help to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
In conclusion, by embracing a holistic lifestyle that combines diet, exercise and natural remedy support, women will reduce the risk of breast cancer.
