By: Richard Bleuze
Diabetes and cardiovascular disease is very common among those that are diabetic. However, there are some things you can do to lessen the chance of cardiovascular disease.
As a diabetic, you should know that monitoring your blood sugar is an important part of your treatment plan. In addition, you also need to pay close attention to what's happening to your heart and blood vessels.
Cardiovascular disease is a common complication of diabetes. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease and stroke caused about 65 percent of all diabetes-related deaths.
However, do not be alarmed. There are lots you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. First, understand the link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
How does diabetes affect your heart and blood vessels?
Diabetes has been shown to damage your blood vessels, including the arteries that supply blood to your heart and brain. When this damage happens it makes it easier for plaques to form in the arteries. Thus, the buildup of arterial plaques can choke off the blood supply and drive up your blood pressure. This then results in a heart attack or stroke.
Inadequate blood flow to the heart will often cause chest pain, shortness of breath, jaw or arm pain, nausea, sweating or fatigue. Thus, as a diabetic, you may not have such clues. Thus, the saying that someone has had a "silent" heart attack.
How to reduce the diabetic the risk of cardiovascular disease?
Remember, you should be seeing your health team. This health care team will help you to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.
* Your number one goal is to manage your blood sugar. By keeping your blood sugar level within your target range, you can prevent or delay blood vessel damage. In addition to daily blood sugar monitoring, have your doctor recommend regular glycated hemoglobin (A1C) testing to gauge your average blood sugar control for the past two to three months at least twice a year.
Your goal as a diabetic is to have an A1C level of 7 percent or less.
* Check your blood pressure often. High blood pressure (hypertension) can lead to various cardiovascular complications by increasing the severity of those complications and hasten their development if you are a diabetic.
Your goal should be to have your blood pressure below 130/80 millimeters of mercury.
* Control your cholesterol and triglycerides.
Your goals should be to lower your LDL cholesterol or "bad," cholesterol below 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). If you have other heart disease risk factors or take cholesterol-lowering herbal products. You should have high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or "good," cholesterol at least 40 mg/dL. Triglycerides should be below 150 mg/dL.
* Make healthy lifestyle changes such as exercising and diet. To manage diabetes and lower your risk of cardiovascular disease you should also lose excess weight. In addition, if you smoke, quit. And if you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation.
