Herbal Supplements for Cholesterol That Work
There is a natural way to lower your cholesterol, in addition to watching what you eat and exercising. There are plenty of dietary supplements on the market that claim to do the trick, but CholesLo does! That is why it is rated the #1 complete cholesterol solution.
Claims of other cholesterlo reducers are not always backed up by research. Though not always perfect, scientific studies of CholesLo show it to be the best alternative health remedy that really works to lower your cholesterlo naturally.
Below are a few herbal supplements that you can purchase individual to lower your cholesterlo:
1. Artichoke Extract
There are a few studies on artichoke leaf extract and cholesterol that exist. However, the results have been mixed. In a 2000 study, people with total cholesterol in the high-risk range who took an artichoke supplement for six weeks lowered their low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or bad cholesterol) levels by 23%, on average. However, in a more recent study, it was found that no measurable impact on either LDL or high-density lipoprotein (HDL, also known as good cholesterol) existed.
Thus more studies are needed to confirm the effect of artichoke on cholesterol (or lack thereof).
2. Fenugreek Seed
There have been several studies since the 1990s that have reported that, in high doses, various fenugreek seed preparations can lower total cholesterol and LDL, in some cases dramatically. However, all of the studies have been small and of poor quality.
3. Soluble Fible
According to a 1999 study at Harvard Medical School, each gram of soluble fiber that you add to your daily diet will lower your LDL by about 2 points. However, the effect is likely to be relatively modest. It takes three bowls of oatmeal a day to yield about 3 grams of soluble fiber. In addition, and fiber supplements can cause some gastrointestinal side effects.
4. Fish Oil
In studies using relatively high doses of fish oil has been shown to lower triglyceride levels—the third component of your total cholesterol number—by around 10% to 30%. However, fish oil doesn’t lower LDL; it actually tends to cause a slight rise in LDL.
5. Garlic
In 2000, the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reported that garlic caused a small but measurable drop in both LDL and total cholesterol in the short term (3 months).
6. Ginseng
Though the research can’t be ignored entirely, there is not enough to evidence to support the use of ginseng to lower cholesterol. Most of the studies were small one the study that found a drop in LDL levels of 45% and a rise in HDL of 44% included only eight participants and was funded by a Korean manufacturer of ginseng products.
7. Guggual
Again most of the studies on guggul reported reductions in total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides of 10% or more, however, most of the studies were small and flawed (typically of most Asian studies). However, in 2003 a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the first guggul study conducted in the U.S., found that guggul had no measurable effect on total cholesterol, HDL, or triglycerides, and that it caused an increase in LDL of about 5%.
8. Niacin
Studies going back to the 1970s have shown that niacin can lower LDL and triglycerides. Niacin's most notable effect is on HDL, which it can raise by up to 35%. Niacin only has this effect at high doses of 2 grams to 3 grams a day. Thus, it is typically administered as a prescription drug such as Niaspan. Niacin, however, is also available as an over-the-counter supplement in doses of 500 milligrams usually. However, please be warned that taking large amounts of niacin can cause potentially serious side effects.
Because of the above, niacin supplements should not be taken in lieu of a prescription.
9. Red Yeast Rice
In studies various red yeast rice preparations have been shown to lower LDL by around 20% to 30%, comparable to a prescription statin. Red yeast rice can be found in CholesLo.
10. Soy Protein
Soy protein may help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering LDL in studies that have been conducted. However, research has found that soy protein has a relatively modest effect.
